The Project

California Association of Food Banks is leading the collective effort to end hunger in California. The non-profit organisation coordinates and works alongside 42 member food banks, providing them with the tools and resources they need to feed the communities who need it most.

The project was to produce an app for the CAFB staff to streamline their existing processes.

My Role

The Problem

Previously, CAFB used a clunky email system for arranging donation deliveries. This was causing…

Time wasted on admin

Each delivery required extensive back-and-forth via email.

Difficulties staying connected

Only desk-based staff could access email alerts, leaving others out of the loop.

Perishable items spoiling

Ultimately, valuable donations were going to waste.

Pitching the Concept

The app needed to allow users to browse and request local food donations quickly. I mocked up these assets during pitch phase, to showcase my vision for the IA and flow of the app.

Discovery Workshop

The immersion session gave us valuable insights into the user need. The facilitation was shared between myself and the Product Owner. We ran the following activities:

JOURNEY SO FAR

Understanding existing systems and how the business has grown to have new needs.

WHO ARE OUR USERS

Understanding the goals and needs of our users, and any pain points in the existing set up.

MAP THE GOLDEN PATH

Outlining the ideal, friction-free user journey through the product, to align on core experience.

TECHNICAL DISCUSSION

Opening the floor to developers to understand technical requirements

The Solution

A portable replacement of their existing clunky email system would significantly reduce back-and-forth, and afford workers more time for other important work.

An app to streamline donation distribution, save perishable produce and free up time for the work that truly matters.

Wireframes

I produced the wireframes based on the requirements we’d uncovered in the immersion session.

Offer List View

Compact and scannable offer cards showing only the most important information to avoid overwhelm.

Set by default to sort by most recently uploaded offers.

Filters

Standard pattern for quick and intuitive filtering, allowing users to see only relevant offers while on the go.

Adding Offers to Cart

A bottom sheet for adding offers to user's cart, including mechanism for editing the quantity.

UI Phase: The Final Outcome

The wireframes were then handed over to the UI designer on this project. The design of this product prioritised simplicity and accessibility, offering an intuitive interface with clear calls to action to reduce friction for users and streamline the adoption process.
